When you are struggling to see the way forwards

My Therapeutic Approach

At times, all of us can find life overwhelming and reaching out to a trained Psychotherapist can be one of the best things you do for yourself or your couple.

Psychotherapy is a deeper way of trying to understand the problems that we all encounter in life. Relationship difficulties, sexual problems, confusion, work stress, anxiety, depression, sadness, grief, trauma, abuse, self-confidence or addiction problems.

I aim to develop a trusting, non-judgemental and entirely confidential relationship with my clients that enables them to gain insight and understanding of themselves and others.

I work with the presenting problem and although my approach is Psychodynamic, I also have many different skill sets to draw on.

My orientation is Psychoanalytic which means that I am trained to work with the unconscious processes that can keep us trapped in a cycle of unhappiness.

Without understanding the deeper processes behind our difficulties, we tend to remain stuck repeating old patterns and find ourselves unable to take full agency of our lives.

Therapy can be challenging but also a life-enhancing and enjoyable experience, understanding emotions and paving the way for a new and more self-aware way of living.

I have a great deal of respect for clients who want to explore themselves and their difficulties in Psychotherapy and it is an honour to help them on their journey.

I offer weekly 50-minute sessions for both short- and long-term work, both in person and on Zoom.

 Couple Work

Overall, most of us would like a meaningful, safe and rewarding relationship with a partner. This is often difficult to achieve and some insight and understanding as to what is being experienced by each member of the couple is helpful.

I offer a safe space for couples to explore their difficulties together. My client is the “Couple Relationship”, and it is essential that both parties feel heard and understood in a non-judgemental setting.

I work with multicultural, heterosexual and all members of the LGBTQ community. Couple relationships are complex and need specific training to understand the underlying dynamics of the relationship that keep couples unhappy and stuck.

Common issues:

  • Communication issues and misunderstandings
  • Trust and feelings of betrayal
  • Managing anger and conflict
  • Gratitude and appreciation
  • Sex and sexuality
  • Intimacy
  • Infidelity and betrayal
  • Early/current family dynamics and their impact on the couple and individual
  • Parenting concerns
  • Financial issues
  • Destructive and abusive behaviour
  • Life goals

I offer couples an initial 90-minute assessment session and then weekly 50–60-minute sessions on a regular basis which is important for progress.

 Individual Work

People come to me with a wide range of issues that are often interlinked. These are some of the more common difficulties that I have worked with:

  • Addictions
  • Anger management
  • Anxiety or stress
  • Bereavement, grief or loss
  • Depression
  • Destructive of abusive behaviour
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Eating disorders
  • Emotional or physical abuse
  • Family or parenting concerns
  • Feeling stuck, lost or lonely
  • Financial difficulty
  • Health related issues
  • Identity issues
  • Issues related to sex or sexuality
  • Loss of meaning or purpose
  • OCD and self-harm
  • Panic disorder
  • Problems with low self-esteem

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does therapy last?

I offer both short and long-term Counselling and Psychotherapy. Duration of therapy depends on your presenting problem and the depth at which you wish to work. You decide how long you wish to continue in therapy and the aim is to develop a trusting relationship where we can discuss when you feel it is the right time to end the work.

Some issues can be addressed in a relatively short space of time, but deeper-rooted issues and behaviours may not be immediately obvious, and this will take longer.

In starting therapy, you are not committed to a specific period of work. Together we review progress but bear in mind that profound change takes time.

What happens in the first session?

During our first session, for couple work I offer an extended assessment session to explore your presenting issues and take a full history.

In individual work I offer the opportunity to undertake an extended assessment but with individual work the first 50-minute introductory session can be enough.

The initial session gives you a feel for how I work and if the therapeutic fit feels right.

It offers an opportunity to clarify any questions and concerns that you may have. I

If we agree to work together, you will then usually come on a weekly basis for 50min sessions at regular agreed time for as long as it is helpful.

I have never had therapy before and am unsure what to say or do?

Starting therapy can be a daunting task in which you can feel unsure regarding what to say or do. Sometimes just reaching out can be the hardest part.

I offer a no charge 30-minute Zoom call so we can discuss what you need help with and to answer any questions.

I aim to create an entirely non-judgemental and trusting environment in which you can explore in your own words and time what may be troubling you.

Establishing a strong therapeutic relationship is an important part of the process as it is of the utmost importance that you feel safe and comfortable to confide in me.

The experience of talking to a therapist is different to confiding in family and friends. It is important that you feel completely free to speak, think and feel openly and honestly in the therapeutic space.

Will our sessions be confidential?

As a registered practitioner accredited by the BACP I adhere to the counselling and psychotherapy ethical framework.

This includes the responsibility to manage your information confidentially and in line with GDPR. Confidentiality means that I will treat your personal information and what you share with me with utmost care and respect, and in line with the BACP ethical guidelines. I will share clinical work with my accredited supervisor who is also bound by confidentiality.

I will only break confidentiality should a safeguarding issue arise within your session. This includes risk of harm or neglect to your health or others. Should such a situation arise I am legally and ethically obliged to raise concerns with my supervisor and/or your GP. Where possible, I will aim to discuss this with you prior to making a disclosure outside of the counselling service.

Do you offer online sessions?

If you cannot make it to my consulting room in person, I offer online counselling and psychotherapy sessions via Zoom.
